Yerba Mate


Mate was used by the indigenous people of Latin America. The word comes from the Quechua word “mati”, which refers to a a drinking vessel in which the leaves are poured. Today in Brazil Mate is simply “erva”, in the Spanish-speaking countries “yerba” or “hierba” (herb, medicinal herb) called. Yerba Mate is the traditional South American caffeine rich infused drink. Mate was first consumed by the indigenous Guaraní and also spread by the Tupí people who lived in that part of southern Brazil which was Paraguayan territory before the Paraguayan War.
